History of Brokerswood Country Park: A Legacy of the Ancient Forest

Brokerswood Country Park encompasses 80 acres of woodland that was once part of a vast 20,000-acre expanse stretching across Dorset, Somerset, and West Wiltshire just 400 years ago. Remarkably, the Park has only had five families of owners since William the Conqueror. Traditionally an Ash and Oak woodland with hazel under the high canopy, these woods have been here since the last ice age. Historically, it served as a hunting estate and provided timber for local use. The Park opened to the public in the 1960s and has proudly received the David Bellamy’s Conservation Award for the 5th time, a testament to our commitment to preservation.

Sue Capon, the present Owner and Director, is actively involved in the Park’s management: “I love this Park because it’s part of my family, having been passed down from generation to generation.”

Barry Capon, Director, adds: “We want to create an atmosphere that is great fun for everyone with a respect for nature that makes people want to come back year after year – and you know something, we are getting the same families coming to stay here every year, we are now welcoming the grandchildren, it will soon be the great grandchildren! It’s about continuity of people and nature.”

Trish Coley, Manager, says: “It’s a privilege to be part of this continued conservation project that has been going on for over 400 years. We believe that we are the preservers of the present for the future.”

Environmental Responsibility and Awards at Brokerswood

Brokerswood Country Park is deeply committed to conservation and has been awarded the prestigious David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award for the 5th consecutive year – one of only a select few parks in the UK to receive this honour.

“A very natural park. Absolutely superb with a pretty lake and forest walks”

Professor David Bellamy, Naturalist and Broadcaster

As this is a conservation area, cycling is unfortunately not permitted within the park. We kindly ask all visitors to respect our environment and take their litter home.

What Our Guests Say: Reviews of Brokerswood

“We love coming to Brokerswood; the children get to jump in puddles, watch the tractor at work, enjoy the play areas or wander around the woods… but the visit to the cafe is the treat for me and persuades me to come – the children get to sit on the animal chairs and play and I get to indulge in a little bit of luxury be it a cup of tea or lunch!!”

Mrs Sarah Coumbe, Rode, Somerset

“We stayed at Brokerswood for four days last summer, and cant wait to go back! We would recommend the park as being very well equipped and family friendly, with plenty to see and do, but also has a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquility.”

Mr Ben Eames, Coleford, Gloucestershire

“We have just come back from our latest visit and every time we visit we love it more and more, the improvements are fantastic and a credit to all the time and effort you have put in to it. Our son and the dog didn’t want to come home, all our son said was can’t we stay a hundred days! We wish. See you again very soon.”

Mrs Helen Hall, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire
